Light up the night with one million lights at the Marble Falls Walkway of Lights, on the shore of Lake LBJ in the Texas Hill Country. Every year, a dozen different communities in central Texas compete to produce the biggest and most impressive Christmas displays as part of the Hill Country Christmas Lighting Trail.

I began inking the Last Airbender prequel comic, and it's looking good so far. Here's some art I've done recently. As you can see, I've been on a streak of digital painting...but being such an impatient and easily bored artist, I'm sure I'll move onto a different phase in no time.

First is Sniper Wolf from Metal Gear Solid. It was done for Obligatory Ice Level Day hosted by The Speed Gamers, who I'm watching right now. They've been holding a Pokemon marathon for charity. They've raised over $13,200 in just 59 hours. Today is their last day of the marathon, so be sure to head over and donate some money. My donation won me a Legendary Pokemon-naming auction and I got to name their Phione "Momar". (I drew fanart of Momar for them.)

Second is Calvin & Hobbes in my rendering of the very last panel of the comic strip.

Third is Luanne Platter from "King of the Hill" in memory of Brittany Murphy who died yesterday.

A small flock of Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) on the edge of the San Antonio River as it passes through Brackenridge Park. A fairly unusual species of duck (they are monogamous pair-bonders, non-migratory, nest in trees and produce a high-pitched whistling), found in the United States only in the most extreme southern parts of Texas (such as here at Brazos Bend State Park) and Arizona.

Pecos River at Pandale Crossing

Picture a Day December 19, 2009 - Pecos River at Pandale Crossing

The Pecos River is often considered a 'dividing line' between the civilized East and the untamed West in Texas - the westernmost watercourse dissecting the state before turning to the unforgiving desert. Near the banks of the Pecos sits the ghost town of Pandale - it was in the middle of nowhere a century ago, and remains in the middle of nowhere today. Just to reach this location requires a four-hour drive from San Antonio, either driving fifty miles along a dead-end rural highway northwest of Comstock, or fifty miles due south from Ozona along bumpy dirt road from the north. Little remains of Pandale other than the old one-room schoolhouse (now a church) and a few scattered ranch houses along Howard Draw.

A few miles to the south on the rough dirt road to Langtry is Pandale Crossing, which is the last easily-accessible river crossing before the Pecos enters the deep canyon gorges as it snakes southward to the Pecos River (so wide and deep it requires the tallest bridge in Texas). At this location (also known as Flat Rock Crossing), the river can be easily forded by foot, horse or auto (with the help of a couple of small concrete bridges) when the water level is low, although a new high-water bridge has recently been built and renovated nearby. This location is a popular spot for canoeists and kayakers, who follow the river down to Lake Amistad near Del Rio. There are few places in Texas more remote that this spot.

I also chose this photo as January 2010 for my yearly calendar.

Just a few miles south of the town of Medina along Highway 16 is Three Mile Crossing. As the days get shorter and the temperature dips towards the first freeze of the season, the picket of cypress trees that line the Medina River turn a rusty brown.

This is also the December 2010 picture for my year-end calendar.

Most of my interests and hobbies run fairly hot or cold -- I'll be intensely interested in something for a while, then slack off for a period of time, only to return to it again many months (or years) later. Anime fits into this category - for the past couple of years, I've been mostly uninterested in most anime shows, largely ignoring most of the 2007, 2008, and 2009 shows. At times, going a few months between watching anything anime-related.

But as I fall into a regular work schedule, and as I search for less expensive entertainment alternatives, I've been looking back at the past few years of anime shows, and looking forward to what is coming ahead.

And, unfortunately, there's just not much worth seeing. The Fall 2009 season was particularly weak. And, alas, the Winter 2010 season appears to be even weaker. Here's the chart:

Out of the crop, I see one solid prospect and one maybe. Durarara looks genuinely intriguing. The trailer is here:

The other "maybe" is So-Ra-No-Wo-To, which has already been dubbed as "K-On Joins the Army". But despite that (and the obvious character design similarities), I sorta got a sneaking suspicion there's more behind the series plot-wise than just some sort of cute giggly girl show, enough to give it a sampling. But if they suddenly crank up the moe factor to eleven (like they did on K-On), I'm outta here.

There's a couple of other shows which might be good, but I'm tending to avoid unless everyone goes crazy over them - notably the vampire show and the samurai show. However, those subjects are big turn-offs for me - much in the same way that giant robots, giant monster anime, harem themed shows and magical girl shows are big negatives in my book. Alas, add those all together and that's something like 80-90% of all anime shows these days. Oh well, I know I'm not the target audience, I can deal with that.

Going backwards, in my recent spate of anime-show-watching:
- Nyan Koi! - Big thumbs down, turned into a run-of-the-mill harem gag show quickly.
- Shigofumi - Moderate thumbs up, reminds me a bit of Paranoia Agent with some of the what-the-fuck plot twists, although the ending was weak.
- To Aru Kagaku no Railgun - Thumbs up - it really doesn't have much to do with science nor railguns. But the plot is surprisingly tight, and characters interesting.
- To Aru Majutsu no Index - Thumbs down! - on the other hand, the preceding series is a jumbled mess with annoying characters. And the story flow is more like an action-fight show, y'know, where the characters spend several minutes yelling at each other as they fight, and before you know it the episode is over. Blech.
- Darker Than Black - Slight thumbs up. Very well done, but I'm trying to figure out whether it is more "cool" or more "pretentious"; I'm leaning towards the former.
- Bakemonogatari - Not yet decided - just a few episodes in, and I'm trying to figure out whether there's some evil genius behind this show, or if it's all just mental masturbation on the author's part. Very stylized, and I can see why Senjougahara is so fascinating.
- Soul Eater - Not yet decided, but leaning towards thumbs down. Unless there's more plot development and less pointless fighting, it's not worth continuing.

Anyway, considering how much of a barren landscape the current anime seasons appear to be, I think I'll turn further back to 2008, 2007, 2006 and earlier for the shows I missed instead.

On the side of the trail at Lost Maples State Park, an adult Baird's Rat Snake (Elaphe bairdi) was attempting to cross the hiking path. A pretty big snake, close to six feet in length, found in central and west Texas as well as northern Mexico, but quite harmless. After getting unwanted attention from humans, it made a u-turn back into the rotted hollow of a fallen tree, where it coiled up like a piece of ribbon candy in a defensive posture.
